  • Wrongfully accused of kidnapping and attempted rape. One winter’s day in Los Angeles, a special education teacher was arrested for the kidnapping and attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl in South Central Los Angeles six months before. The victim had identified the teacher's car and later picked him out of a group of photographs months after the incident had occurred. Following his arrest, the accused was locked up in a county jail for more than ten months, constantly threatened and abused by other inmates because they believed he was a child molester. Retained by his defense attorney, Larsen AVR Group not only exposed that the police had manipulated evidence and coached a witness in order to ensure a conviction, but also established that the defendant was actually miles away from the crime scene at the time of the attack and could not possibly have committed the crime. The judge agreed and issued an unusual ruling declaring the defendant to be “factually innocent.” A subsequent lawsuit resulted in an $18-million award to the defendant, the largest ever against the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
